Understanding Oral Mucositis

Oral health is important for your overall wellbeing, but many people don’t fully appreciate the wide range of issues that can occur when oral problems present themselves. One of the most common – but most serious – problems is oral mucositis, and it deserves a closer look.

According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, mucositis is an issue that occurs when cancer treatments cause tissue swelling within the mouth. Symptoms can include things like: Mouth pain

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Sores in the mouth

It can be a problematic issue for those with cancer, and can make treatment even more difficult to tolerate. As such, managing oral mucositis is important. A few basic steps can help, as described by Medline Plus. These include:

  • Use of a toothbrush with soft bristles
  • Fluoride-based toothpaste
  • Brushing teeth and gums regularly
  • Use of a gentle mouthwash that doesn’t have alcohol in it. These antibacterial mouth rinses can be used several times each day and could help reduce symptoms.

Mucositis can be caused by additional issues including overall poor dental health, smoking, and even dehydration. No matter the cause, it’s important to find the steps that can help you prevent and reduce it in your life. The steps above are the beginning of a solid prevention regimen.
