Dry Mouth Mouthwash
For many, people taking good care of your mouth simply means doing two things diligently; brushing and flossing your teeth. In most cases, these two simple acts will be enough to prevent tooth decay and gum disease from taking hold in a mouth. They are the first line of defense against not just pain and discomfort, but a serious, negative impact on everyday activities like eating and talking.

Sometimes, unfortunately, this isn’t enough, and in many instances, this is not the fault of the person with some kind of oral affliction. There are many instances where just brushing and/or flossing will not be sufficient to protect against some more serious oral disorders. In some cases, the oral discomfort may even be an expected, unpleasant side-effect of a bigger, more sustained medical treatment that is addressing some other condition. It’s in instances like this that some people may be afflicted with “dry mouth.” But that doesn’t mean that this is something that they have to live with. There is help, in the form of a dry mouth mouthwash.

The Xerostomia Problem

Dry mouth is a medical condition with a proper scientific name, known as “Xerostomia.” In most cases, xerostomia, or dry mouth, is just a very minor symptom with an easy to trace cause and cure. Most dry mouth is simply the result of not enough hydration, and a normal intake of fluids can address the problem.

But moderate to severe cases of chronic xerostomia are a different matter entirely. The condition itself is usually not a sickness, but a symptom of a much larger problem. In these cases, the mouth is experiencing a disorder the affects its natural ability to produce saliva.

When this happens, speaking can become difficult, and even eating certain drier foods can cause problems. Saliva, combined with chewing, is a necessary first stage in breaking down food and making it ready for proper digestion. Saliva also acts as a protective coating in the mouth, “shielding” it against certain types of bacteria that can be harmful if they gain a foothold and infect the gums. This is one of the reasons why we created our dry mouth mouthwash.

How You Get It

Xerostomia is not that common a condition; only 10% of the world ever suffers from it, though that percentage has more females for reasons that science has yet to discover. Unlike some conditions, which can only be contracted in one specific way, Xerostomia has multiple causes
Medications can sometimes cause Xerostomia. A specific combination of an individual sensitivity to certain compounds in some anti-histamines, or prescription blood pressure medicine has been documented to cause a dry mouth reaction. Some anti-depressants can also cause a reaction during the beginning of a course of medication. In all of these cases, the benefits of the medicine are obvious, but xerostomia is clearly an unfortunate side-effect.

Other medical treatment techniques can also cause serious cases of dry mouth. In the case of a diagnosis of cancer in the jaw or neck, chemotherapy or radiation therapy is often advised in order to battle the disease. However, these intense forms of therapy do not discriminate between healthy and unhealthy cells, and the cells within the mouth responsible for producing saliva are particularly vulnerable. So once again, despite the clear necessity of such a treatment, severe xerostomia is a known accompanying health hazard.

What To Do

In the event that the cause of the dry mouth is something that you can’t really address, such as a necessary medical treatment, the next best thing is to boost the protection in your mouth and help relieve the symptoms. A specialized dry mouth mouthwash is perfect for this.

Simply drinking water, while moistening your mouth, doesn’t provide much in the way protection, or provide any relief from discomfort. A regular general consumer mouthwash may have anti-bacterial properties, but the use of alcohol to disinfect the mouth can eradicate the beneficial bacteria that naturally resides in your mouth.

A medicated dry mouth mouthwash like Prevention Mouth Rinse not only prevents harmful bacteria from developing, but selectively ignores the beneficial bacteria. It also provides soothing relief for the physical discomfort experienced by severe dry mouth, and can help to fight oral infections and speed up healing. Your mouth is more vulnerable with severe dry mouth, but a dry mouth mouthwash provides the relief and protection you need. It’s easy to use, doesn’t hurt at all, and, with multiple use during the course of a day, can make a big difference in oral protection and comfort.
